Freelance Projects

Clients: Independent Music Artists

Deliverables: Print, Digital, Web Consulting

Working directly with independent musicians presents a distinct creative challenge. There is no style guide, approval chain, or brand manager to defer to. The artist is the brand, and therefore the work must represent something true about who they are before it can connect with an audience.

My freelance work in the music industry includes logo design, promotional posters, album artwork, stickers, and merchandise for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame artist-in-residence Joe Brown and Nashville-based music producer Mike Yuhos. Before making any design decisions, each project began with an awareness of the artist’s current visual universe, audience, and message.

For the Nashville producer Mike Yuhos, my work extended into website consulting: advising on layout, visual hierarchy, copy, and overall direction to make his online presence a cohesive extension of his music and identity.

The constraint in freelance work isn’t brand standards or template systems, it’s subjectivity. An artist knows when something feels right and when it doesn’t, even if they can’t always say why. Learning to ask the right questions, and the skill to interpret what someone means rather than just what they say, is where the most challenging work actually happens.
